National Science Museum

Profile

The National Science Museum (NSM), under the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research, and Innovation, serves as a leading institution for science communication and education in Thailand. Dedicated to promoting lifelong learning, NSM operates a diverse range of museums, programs, and outreach initiatives to engage the public with science, technology, and innovation in meaningful and enjoyable ways. Its mission is to inspire curiosity, support scientific literacy, and cultivate a culture of exploration and critical thinking among learners of all ages.

NSM’s museum complex is anchored by the iconic Science Museum, known for its distinctive architectural design featuring three massive cubes balanced on their points. This museum introduces visitors to core scientific concepts, modern technology, and traditional Thai innovations through immersive and interactive exhibits. Adjacent to it, the Natural History Museum serves as a hub for biodiversity and taxonomy research, showcasing the evolutionary history of life through an extensive collection of natural specimens. The Information Technology Museum focuses on the past, present, and future of digital communication, inspiring creative thinking, and innovation. Another key facility, the Rama 9 Museum, emphasizes biodiversity and ecosystems across Thailand and Southeast Asia. It integrates lessons on sustainability and harmony between humans and nature, drawing from the Sufficiency Economy Philosophy of King Bhumibol Adulyadej The Great.

To expand accessibility, NSM has established Science Square centers in major cities such as Bangkok, Chiang Mai, and Nakhon Ratchasima. These centers act as urban science hubs where families and young learners can explore hands-on exhibits and science-themed entertainment. Beyond the museum walls, the Science Caravan and outreach programs bring mobile exhibitions to rural and underserved areas, allowing children across the country to engage with science in a fun and interactive setting.

NSM also offers a variety of education programs for students, teachers, and the public. These activities emphasize an inquiry-based approach through science labs, walk rallies, competitions, and professional training. The museum’s flagship event, the National Science and Technology Fair, celebrates Thailand’s scientific heritage and innovation by featuring exhibitions from national and international organizations. NSM further expands its reach through online learning platforms, social media content, and interactive resources like lab kits and science toys developed under the “Plearn Science” initiative, promoting STEAM education nationwide.

With its comprehensive approach to science education, NSM continues to play a vital role in building a scientifically engaged and informed society, ensuring that learning remains accessible, inclusive, and enjoyable for all.
